Moorlands management
The Kinder and Bleaklow moorlands are important landscape and wildlife habitat
areas. Unfortunately the peat is under threat from rapid erosion. Cottongrass
planting on a large scale and heather seed sowing seems to be an effective
method of stabilising the peat. Another beneficial method is the damming of the streams that drain the peat moorland to minimise the amount of
peat that is removed by runoff.
Control of rhododendrons
Rhododendrons are an introduced species to this country and were widely planted
on estates. Left uncontrolled they spread rapidly and tend to suppress the
growth of other plants. The measures used to control rhododendrons include
cutting and burning, using a species specific weed killer and digging or
dragging the roots out.
